Yes folks, they’re at it again. And this time they’re not just hating on evolution; they’ve broadened their hatred to include octopods. WorldNutDaily author and Creationist Joseph Farah takes us on a trip down misconception-lane with his latest polemic on the recently discovered, 95 million year old Cretaceous cephalopods. In his very direct opening remarks he states:
It looks just like a modern-day octopus – complete with eight legs, rows of suckers and even traces of ink.
In all that time, it seems, the octopus hasn’t evolved – not one tiny bit.
It would seem that way, I agree; it would seem that way if you have absolutely no idea what it is you’re talking about. Now, I know how hard it can be to criticize a man with such an amazing mustache, but all it takes is a basic knowledge of cephalopod anatomy and evolution to see just how much these specimens differ from extant species.
For instance, the gladius of the specimens is quite robust. In modern forms of octopods it has been reduced to a quite miniscule rod. With these fossils included, paleontologists
are now possess a better understanding of the evolution of the gladius in octopods, from the ancestral unpaired shell to a very reduced divided shell in modern forms. It’s clear Farah’s claims come from the perspective of an individual who looks at a V12 Vanquish and a Tricycle and state they are the same because they both move. It’s sad, really.
He doesn’t stop there, however. Oh no, he goes on to criticize scientists for not supporting the idea of a great flood. He states:
No allowance is given for the possibility of worldwide calamities such as the Flood described in detail in the greatest history book man has ever known. Could such a catastrophe have markedly shifted strata? No, because evolutionary scientists know the Flood is a myth – even though there are accounts of it in every culture in the world.
I’m assuming “the greatest history book man has ever known” is not Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Of course, his logic here is flawless. I mean, if every culture on earth accounted for a flood then that must mean one existed. And, you know, I might actually have to agree with him if he wasn’t talking out of his ass. I would like to direct your attention, once again, to the misconception of the centrality of religion and its creation/destruction myths to culture. If you do a little homework, Mr. Farah, you would uncover the reality that there are quite a few cultures that have no flood myths.
From what I understand, and I am no historian of Japanese mythology, there exists no flood myth in Japan. Also, a culture I really love to brag about is the Pirahã, which not only have no flood myth, but have no belief in a higher power whatsoever. This absence of a flood myth is true of the cultures of the Asatru, ancient Egyptians, and countless others in Northern Africa, Amazonia, Eastern Europe, etc…
Not only this, but if a universal flood actually happened, we would expect that flood myths would have similar descriptions (Such as length, for instance). Of course, what cultural anthropologists see is nothing of the sort. In these cultures which do have flood myths the similarities between cultures are seen in increasing frequency in those cultures which are closer together, while the frequency of differences is higher in those cultures which are more distant. How is this possible if the flood was universal? Similarly, there is a lower frequency of flood myths accounted for in cultures that are landlocked or are located in high altitudes. How do you explain this, Farah?
Of course, these are silly questions to ask. There is absolutely no scientific evidence whatsoever for a flood, just as there is none for the existence of supernatural beings.
But, does he stop here? Oh no… He still hasn’t hit on the completely relevant topic of global warming.
It’s funny to me that many of the same scientists who discount the Flood are believers in man-made global warming. While there’s plenty of evidence for a worldwide Flood, there’s no scientific evidence for man-made global warming. It is a pipedream. It is a hoax to enslave mankind to global authorities. [emphasis added]
What evidence? Where?
I’m not sure if you know this or not, readers, but it is very easy to discount the massive amounts of evidence accumulated by climate scientists on the topic of human influenced global warming. How? Illiteracy. This is the only way I can understand the ignorance of Farah. The man has focused so much of his energy on fashioning a flawless mustouche that he simply forgot to learn how to read. This would also explain why he believes The Bible to be the “greatest history book man has ever known.”
